"Wahya" is the Native American Cherokee word for "Wolf." "The Great Teacher - Wahya" is one of several Semi-Relief Sand Sculptures in my Native American Medicine Wheel series. It comes framed and ready to hang.
"The Great Teacher - Wahya" represents the medicine of "Wolf." Wolf is the forerunner of new ideas, and the Wolf Clan is the Clan of Teachers. The moon is symbolic of the knowledge and wisdom within the unconscious mind. Wolf connects with the Moon Energy, bringing teachings and new ideas to just below the surface of the consciousness. In the decoration of the Wheel, I have embedded a genuine Jasper gemstone. Jasper embodies tranquility and wholeness, especially in times of stress.

I learned about the traditional Navajo sand art, commonly known as Sand Painting, from a Native co-worker when I was stationed in New Mexico in the 1990's. From there, I have developed my own signature sand sculpture style, which literally builds up upon the traditional technique. In respect for the origins of this art form, I have embarked upon my Native American Medicine Wheel series. In each sculpture I take an animal and attempt to help the viewer understand various Native American "medicines" through symbolism.
My signature Sand Sculptures consist completely of hundreds of layers of sand held together with a water/glue mix, which I brush onto the Birch Plywood base, or other wooden base, & each layer of sand thereafter. No moldings are used. The finalized sculpture is coated with a topcoat to ensure stability and adds another level of "sticking power" to the sand. While the sculpture should be handled with care, it is completely touchable, and will not fall apart under normal handling or display.
The sand is naturally colored, meaning no paint or dyes are used, and is either purchased from Scenic Sand or collected from my travels around the world. For example, White is from Florida's Gulf Coast, Black from Mexico's beaches, Yellow from the country Jordan, Reds & Browns from the Painted Desert in Utah, Pink from Bermuda's beaches, and Tans from Virginia Beach.
Some portions of my sculptures can extend out a couple of inches from the board giving the piece quite a bit of dimension, but make this sort of work very time consuming as the glue mixture must be set before applying the next layer, and there are several hundred layers of sand composing each sculpture.
Unlike beach and mandala sand art, my sand sculptures are completely solid and sculpted to last. (I still own a few of my first sculptures, which have hung in my home for 20 years!) While they should be treated with the same care as a regular painting, dusty sand sculptures can be carefully cleaned with the soft brush of your vacuum cleaner.
