Symbolism of the Original Sculpture:
"THE LEADER WITHIN - TOHO (COUGAR)"
"Toho" is the Native American Hopi word for "Cougar" or "Mountain Lion."
"The Leader Within - Toho" represents the medicine of "Cougar."
The cougar, as a relatively solitary animal, cannot count on a pack or pride leader and must hunt for himself to survive. Therefore, leadership must be found within. This leadership is displayed through integrity and by being an example to others.
Cougar medicine enables us to lead from within and find courage to follow our own convictions and heart. Yet, it teaches us to be honest with ourselves and find the truth behind our desires.
Embedded in the decoration of the original Sand Sculpture (see link below) are genuine Rhodonite and Aventurine gemstones.
Rhodonite helps us find the energy to overcome the difficulties in life, while Aventurine brings inner harmony, allowing us to find balance within.

As a Fine Art and Consignment artist for over 30 years, I now work primarily in Semi-Relief Sand Sculpting, though am also known for my Oil Painting, Pencil, Pen & Ink, Hot Glass Sculpture or Lampworking, and Woodwork. I paint a wide range of subjects, but specialize in landscapes, oftentimes presenting my love of the mountains and the West through my scenes. Beyond the traditional landscape, many of my paintings tie history or symbolism together to create a story or emotional connection with the viewer.
I learned about the traditional Navajo sand art, commonly known as Sand Painting, from a Native co-worker when I was stationed in New Mexico in the 1990's. From there, I have developed my own signature sand sculpture style, which literally builds up upon the traditional technique. In respect for the origins of this art form, I have embarked upon my Native American Medicine Wheel series. In each sculpture I take an animal and attempt to help the viewer understand various Native American "medicines" through symbolism.
