The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in the Eastern US is home to Bears, Egrets, Alligators, and hundreds of other wildlife! People have also lived in the Swamp for thousands of years - the Native Americans tell of Big Bear and White Swan who saved their villages by ridding the land of the terrible Firebird. During the Civil War, Slaves retreated into the Swamp to hide. There are many tales of ghosts and other fantastical creatures who are purported to inhabit the Swamp to this day!
